the Tor
Fire & BloodThe Tor was a Dornish stronghold caught in the repeated reversals of the First Dornish War: its steward surrendered to Aegon Targaryen, its royal garrison was killed when Dornish forces retook it, and Visenya Targaryen later directed Vhagar’s fires against it. Its brief submission and loss exemplify how little the Conqueror’s occupation secured in Dorne.
Place and First Surrender
During Aegon’s invasion of Dorne, the Lord of the Tor had recently died. When Aegon reached the stronghold, its steward surrendered without a fight. The submission came amid a campaign in which the crown also took Skyreach and Yronwood, but it rested on the steward’s decision rather than a reported battle at the Tor.
Dornish Recapture
Aegon declared Dorne part of his realm and appointed royal officers to govern the lands and castles he had taken. But after he and his host departed, Dornish forces rose against the occupation. Within a fortnight, the Tor was among the strongholds recaptured, and its royal garrison was put to the sword. The swift reversal showed that the surrender had not secured lasting control for the crown.
Later Attack and Significance
The Tor was again a target in the conflict’s cycle of retaliation. After Dornish raiders attacked settlements along Cape Wrath in 8 AC, Visenya returned to Dorne and Vhagar’s fires were loosed upon the Tor, as well as Sunspear, Lemonwood, and Ghost Hill. The account records the attack but does not specify the damage there. Across these episodes, the Tor’s allegiance and security shifted with the competing campaigns: first yielded, then recovered by Dorne, and later exposed to dragonfire.
